Arlene Yakush – Digital Imagery

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

Getty In the morning, I sit under the umbrella at the Getty while I drink my first coffee of the day.

In the afternoon, I become just one of the many sheep in the herd, traveling the countryside near Mount Etna.

In the early evening, I am one with the lake as I sit upon its bank.

These are just a few of the places Arlene has taken me to, through the grace of her eye behind the lens. Many of her photographs adorn my walls. Her compositions repeatedly lure me to locations I have yet to see with my own vision, but where I feel at home, find great comfort, and experience complete serenity.

Whether it is a classic photograph, or a deftly manipulated digital image, Arlene has the ability to capture the essence of a moment in time and space – in all of its beauty, clarity and magnificence.

Orly Avineri -Fine Art, Graphics, Textiles & Murals

ora source

I had the privilege recently to meet with Orly in her home. From the moment you walk through the door you are sweetly introduced to her world. The scent of rosemary leaves burning, the subtle rhythms of the desert in Israel, the vibrant colors and rich textures found on the walls, in the fabrics, in the photographs, in the stunningly simple presentation of tea snacks – ginger bread and sliced blood orange.
This is Orly’s realm, and it is very comfortable and peaceful, and you look forward to staying awhile.

Her art is a true representation of her – brilliant, multi-dimensional, harmonious, accommodating, and extremely versatile. She has extensive experience in the many facets of graphic design, textile design, fine art, and illustration – each lending itself effectively to a variety of different purposes.

Breathtaking, bold, and moving …
This one has to be one of my all time favorites.

Silvia lives her art. Whether it is meticulously working on one of her paintings, designing one of her magnificent Healing Stone Creations, blending her fabulous essential oil perfumes, or giving a transforming Reiki session.

Her paintings are all very colorful and alive, just like her – and they inspire great joy! They must be experienced. To view additional works by Silvia please click here.

Rainforest Flora, Inc., Torrance, CA

42881384-1.jpegFinding retreat in the middle of the city can be quite a challenge to say the least, but every time I have walked in to Rainforest Flora on bustling Hawthorne Boulevard, I am instantly taken a million miles away. The air even feels different, with a lovely mist cascading down on you, as you meander through the winding paths of exquisite plant life, rocks and ponds.

Offering a tremendous variety of Bromeliads, Air Plants and Staghorn Ferns, this incredible self sufficient nursery, also provides a unique habitat for several forms of wild life (koi, frogs and humming birds to name a few).

Even though the hum of the constant traffic outside is somewhat noticeable from the inside of this greenhouse (they get a nice breeze from the street side and often have the entire front open with just netting as a barrier), I still always think to myself what an amazing place it would be to receive a massage, or have a spa party amongst the waterfalls.

If you are trying to create a sacred space within your home or treatment room, I highly suggest you visit Rainforest Flora. The many different species and hybrids they have available can lend themselves perfectly to a variety of environments.

For more information visit their website at www.rainforestflora.com

Better yet, go visit them in person at:

19121 Hawthorne Blvd.
Torrance, CA 90503

They are open Monday through Saturday from 9 to 5 PST

Excellent Trumpet Player, Exceptional Teacher

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

In search for the perfect trumpet teacher last year, we were fortunate to get connected with Megan Swan, trumpet player extraordinaire, musical virtuoso, and all around really wonderful person.

Classically trained at USC Thornton School of Music, Megan also plays and teaches other genres of music such as jazz, rock and world. Her philosophy about music with regards to instructing children and adults alike, is that it is “part discipline (practice) and part pure enjoyment, and you cannot have one without the other.” Her goal is to train students the “techniques they will need to be able to play what they want at their best, so they can reap the rewards music can bring.” She does this beautifully!

Since one of my sons began trumpet lessons with her, my other son decided to take piano, and she does equally well giving guidance with both instruments. As co-director of the Young Musicians Performance Academy (YMPA) in Hermosa Beach, she and her partner provide instruction for beginning, intermediate, and advanced jazz band students for South Bay youth.

For a glimpse at Megan’s trumpet playing, click here
and check her out in Kanye West’s band (first trumpet player on the left) on the Jimmy Kimmell Show.

Three Very Effective, Natural Sleep Aids

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Good Sleep Trio – Ahh, one of our best sellers from our line of natural body products. A beautiful little package with 3 emerald bottles inside – my salvation at 4 a.m. – I just take my pick, and fall back to sleep in no time. If I happen to remember to rub a couple of drops of these powerful essential oil blends between my wrists before bed, I’m golden and pretty much out for the whole night. Here are variations on those recipes. See if they work for you!
(Please see our page entitled “Precautions” before using essential oils or herbs)

Slumberland

  • 1/2 ounce of Carrier Oil
  • 3 drops of Neroli,
  • 2 drops of Lavender
  • 2 drops of Vetiver,
  • 1 drop of Valerian

(Avoid if Pregnant; Not to be used on children)

Quieting

  • 1/2 ounce Carrier Oil
  • 2 drops of Lavender
  • 1 drop of Coriander
  • 1 drop of Marjoram
  • 1 drop of Neroli

(Avoid if Preganant; Not to be used on children)

A & T’s Zzzz Blend

  • 1/2 ounce Carrier Oil
  • 3 drops of Lavender
  • 2 drops of Roman Chamomile
  • 2 drops of Mandarin
  • 1 drop of Neroli

(Citrus oils increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight, so don’t choose to nap in the sun after applying this!)

Drop the above pure essential oils into a carrier oil such as sweet sesame oil or apricot kernel oil, and store in a dark amber, cobalt, or emerald glass vial. Rub 1 or 2 drops between wrists before bed and let the oils do their work.
